Our work

BarrierFree focuses on a combination of Building Code compliance requirements and best practice accessible design principles.

Our end goal is to provide guidance to our clients in a way that is pragmatic and easy to incorporate, to improve the experience of people in different environments.

Our opinion is sought on matters of compliance with New Zealand Building regulations by territorial authorities and/or designers as part of the building consent process. We also provide education through seminars and accessibility training, as well as auditing, reporting and collaborating with project design teams. We are often asked by Building Control officers to provide our formal opinion on compliance with accessibility regulations, to assist their consenting processes.

Our team members are regularly asked to sit on reference or advisory groups. Occasionally, we are also asked to write guidance material about how to make buildings accessible on behalf of central or local government.

our approach

We aim to advance better access for everyone, regardless of age or ability.

Our focus is on achieving the best possible outcomes for usable and accessible spaces while influencing and advising decision-makers. Always practical and action-focused, we believe the best way to improve accessibility is by providing solutions specific to the project and working collaboratively with others to get the best results.

What sets us apart:

  • We collate our extensive knowledge of the needs of different impairment types into a technical document that designers can apply directly to specific design stages or consent processes. This makes it easy to understand and negates the need to seek advice from multiple sources.
  • We are not advocating for accessibility, we are educating and providing technical ‘know-how’, which advocates for itself.
  • We look for unique and project-specific solutions. We do not have a “one-size-fits-all” approach; rather, we look specifically at the project, where it is, its purpose, the budget, the aesthetics and any restrictions, and provide solutions that account for all of these factors.
